Meet the Artist: Herb Parker
Get a sneak peak of what's in store for the upcoming Bending Nature exhibition by meeting one of the featured artists as he winds down his residency and shows off his latest creation. Not your traditional landscape artist, Herb Parker's nature-based installations are created to enhance a viewer's perception of the environment and our relationship with nature. Parker, a professor of Art at the College of Charleston in North Carolina, has created over three dozen installations in the United States, Canada, Japan and Italy.

Watercolor Gardens with Mindy Newman
Beginner and experienced students are both welcome to join this class taught by watercolorist Mindy Newman.  Conservatory plant collections and special exhibitions serve as inspiration and subject matter.  Focus on different techniques in each class and build your skills over time.  Choose from three different class options to suit your schedule:

Intensives:
Choose from: Sept. 6, 13, or Mar. 21, 28
Time: 10 am – 3 p.m. with lunch break
Cost: $36 members, $40 non-members

Series: Each series consists of four consecutive classes

Tai Chi Introductory Course
Learn the first 17 movements of this ancient Chinese art.  Suitable for all levels of fitness, Tai Chi exercises incorporate slow, natural movements that work all of the body systems deeply, yet gently.  Unique health benefits include stress reduction and increased balance, concentration, and relaxation.  Taught by the members of the Taoist Tai Chi Society USA-Ohio.

Composting 101
Join Bill Dawson, Growing to Green Community Gardening Outreach specialist for a hands-on demonstration. Learn the ins and outs of the greens and the browns of composting. Put those autumn leaves to good use and create compost with them.  Learn how to create and maintain a compost pile, and what to do with the compost you make. Meet at the Conservatory main entrance. Rain may cancel – please call ahead.

Botanical Drawing: Graphite Pencil
Students in this class will learn to observe with an artist’s perspective, and how to create botanical drawings using graphite pencil. The course will include instruction on: contour line drawing, shading, composition, perspective, foreshortening, texture and detail.  This class is suitable for the beginner or for the returning student looking to hone their skills. Students should bring the following supplies to class: 2 H, 2B, 6B and Ebony Pencil, Pink Pearl Eraser, 9” x 12” sketch book, and 1 sheet of 22” x 30” 100% Cotton Paper .

Botanical Drawing: Colored Pencil
Express your interest in the colorful beauty of the Conservatory using colored pencils as a medium.  Enhance your drawing skills using new methods specific to colored pencils. Techniques covered include: color mixing, layering, building and burnishing in color. Students should bring the following supplies to class: Prisma Pencil, Creole pencil, 9” x 12” sketch book, Mi Tientes Paper.

Botanical Drawing: Pen & Colored Pencil
This class allows students to experiment with new materials and techniques. Combining pen and pencil, students learn to layer colors, blend, and burnish your drawings.  Practice the accuracy of plant designs by interacting with the botanical collection in the conservatory.  Students should bring the following materials to class: Prisma Pencils, Crayola Pencils, 9” x 12” sketch book and one sheet of Mi Tientes paper. Fine point ball point pen, Ultra sharp Sharpie, and Regular nib.

Time: 1:00 – 3:00 pm, Thursdays

Create Your Own Thanksgiving Centerpiece
FPC horticulture designer Barb Arnold provides step-by-step guidance on making a living centerpiece for your holiday table.  Use live evergreens, miniature gourds and other seasonal material to create a unique “table-scape” approximately 8”x14”. Register for this program by November18: 614-645-5923

Family Fun

Each weekend morning from 10 a.m. until noon, the “Adopt a Butterfly” program allows visitors to get a hands-on experience releasing a butterfly into the Pacific Island room. Cost: $4 members $5 non-members per butterfly, while supply lasts.

Everyday at 1 & 3 p.m. a Conservatory guide greets visitors in the Pacific Island Water Garden and give a short presentation on butterflies as they are released. Newly emerged butterflies will drink the nectar of the tropical blooms.

Family Fun Second Saturdays
For ages 5 & up with adult companions
Programs begin at 11:00 a.m.  Free with admission to Conservatory.
           
October 11: Be inspired by the works of Worthington Ohio-based artist Dorothy Gill Barnes, and make your own masterpiece from natural materials.

November 8: Gather fallen leaves, twigs, seeds, and stones, and create an outdoor collage in the style of Andy Goldsworthy.

December 13: Celebrate Holidays at the Conservatory and make a festive headband you can wear.

Families Create Art with Dorothy Gill Barnes
Join artist Dorothy Gill Barnes as she leads a children's workshop designed to create a piece of kinetic art which, weather permitting, will be displayed on the Conservatory lawn. Ages 6-12 with accompanying adult.
