Gardening workshop:
Putting Your Garden to Bed

to wind-down your garden and prepare for spring’s productivity.

Bending Nature - a tour with the curator
Join exhibition curator, Robert Stearns, for a walk through Bending Nature. His tour will provide an introduction to the exhibition, focusing on works by artists not represented in the Artist’s Forum which follows the curatorial tour.

Artist’s Forum: Bending Nature
Artists Laura Stein, Dennis Oppenheim, Herb Parker and
Shigeo Kawashima discuss their work in relation to the themes
of the Bending Nature exhibition. The discussion is mediated
by exhibition curator, Robert Stearns.

Join Bending Nature artist Dorothy Gill Barnes
as she leads a walking tour of her work.
Barnes will share materials she has harvested from nature at her home in Worthington and talk about the designs they suggest to her.

Franklin Park Conservatory’s own horticulture designer Barb Arnold leads a tour of her individual pieces in Bending Nature as well as the new rooftop gardens, Zen Terrace and The Grove. Get to know this horticultural artist and the creative process that goes on behind the beautiful Conservatory gardens.

Composting 101 - What to do with all those leaves!?

Learn the ins and outs of the greens and browns of composting.
Put those autumn leaves to good use and create compost with them! Learn how to create and maintain a compost pile, and what to do with the compost you make.

Location: Meet at the entrance to the Conservatory.

Create Your Own Willow Furniture
Join us as we welcome Master Furniture Builder and author of Gypsy Twig Furniture, Bim Willow, for a workshop on building your own rustic furniture. Mold and bend fresh twigs, sticks and willow into heirlooms. Build a project of your choice -- chair, loveseat, arbor, garden bench, trellis (flat or tripod) -- in just 1-4 hours. Share in the satisfaction of crafting function from nature. Dream big – but remember that you
have to transport your project home! All materials included, and pricing varies with your choice of project. Advance registration by November 1
is required so that materials can be collected.

Create Your Own Bonsai
Bonsai curator Dan Binder leads a hands-on class where students create
a small bonsai in the cascade style. Materials and care instruction are provided, and you’ll take home your very own bonsai – for yourself or
as a gift for others. Children 12 & up are welcome to attend.

Meet the Artist: Pearl Fryar
Spend an afternoon with featured artist, Pearl Fryar for a topiary
demonstration, film screening and Q&A discussion. Mr. Fryar will
demonstrate his self- taught technique that led him to create the
largest topiary garden in the United States at his home in Bishopville, South Carolina. A Man Named Pearl is a film documentary about the artist that won the Audience Choice Award at both the Heartland and Salem Film Festivals. Join in a discussion at the end of the film and get to know this inspirational artist and person as he shares his insights on art and life.

Create Your Own Thanksgiving Centerpiece
Horticulture designer Barb Arnold provides step-by-step guidance
on making a centerpiece for your holiday table. Use live evergreens,
miniature gourds and other seasonal material to create a unique
“table-scape” approximately 8”x14”.

Beginner and experienced students are both welcome to join this class taught by watercolorist Mindy Newman.  Conservatory plant collections and special exhibitions serve as inspiration and subject matter.  Focus on different techniques in each class and build your skills over time.  Choose from three different class options to suit your schedule:

Tai Chi Introductory Course
Learn the first 17 movements of this ancient Chinese art.  Suitable for all levels of fitness, Tai Chi exercises incorporate slow, natural movements that work all of the body systems deeply, yet gently.  Unique health benefits include stress reduction and increased balance, concentration, and relaxation.  Taught by the members of the Taoist Tai Chi Society USA-Ohio.

Composting 101
Join Bill Dawson, Growing to Green Community Gardening Outreach specialist for a hands-on demonstration. Learn the ins and outs of the greens and the browns of composting. Botanical Drawing: Graphite Pencil
Students in this class will learn to observe with an artist’s perspective, and how to create botanical drawings using graphite pencil. The course will include instruction on: contour line drawing, shading, composition, perspective, foreshortening, texture and detail.  This class is suitable for the beginner or for the returning student looking to hone their skills. Students should bring the following supplies to class: 2 H, 2B, 6B and Ebony Pencil, Pink Pearl Eraser, 9” x 12” sketch book, and 1 sheet of 22” x 30” 100% Cotton Paper .

Botanical Drawing: Colored Pencil
Express your interest in the colorful beauty of the Conservatory using colored pencils as a medium.  Enhance your drawing skills using new methods specific to colored pencils. Techniques covered include: color mixing, layering, building and burnishing in color. Students should bring the following supplies to class: Prisma Pencil, Creole pencil, 9” x 12” sketch book, Mi Tientes Paper.

Botanical Drawing: Pen & Colored Pencil
This class allows students to experiment with new materials and techniques. Combining pen and pencil, students learn to layer colors, blend, and burnish your drawings.  Practice the accuracy of plant designs by interacting with the botanical collection in the conservatory.  Students should bring the following materials to class: Prisma Pencils, Crayola Pencils, 9” x 12” sketch book and one sheet of Mi Tientes paper. Fine point ball point pen, Ultra sharp Sharpie, and Regular nib.

December 13: Celebrate Holidays at the Conservatory and make a festive headband you can wear.

Families Create Art with Dorothy Gill Barnes
Join artist Dorothy Gill Barnes as she leads a children's workshop designed to create a piece of kinetic art which, weather permitting, will be displayed on the Conservatory lawn. Ages 6-12 with accompanying adult.
