Did you know that a colony of Honey Bees can actually make decisions?! Explore some of the amazing “mechanics of thought” that bees employ at the individual and colony level to make decisions. Also get an overview of some of the biology and social structure of a hive and join a discussion about some of the things you can do to help our pollinator communities. Weather permitting, there will be a hive visit before the lecture!
Dave Noble is currently the Apiarist at Stratford Ecological Center in Delaware, OH. There he cares for the Center’s bee hives, runs the queen production and breeding program, and is involved with many educational programs including the Beekeeper Apprenticeship training program for new and aspiring beekeepers. The Beekeeper Apprenticeship is a comprehensive, 6 month long, bee-centered training program that emphasizes hands on experience and using the science of bee biology and behavior to develop beekeeping practices. Dave’s beekeeping philosophy is “Learn to listen to the bees and they will tell you what to do.”
